Gymnast Aniyah in impeccable form



BUDDING rhythmic gymnast Aniyah Aira Ahmad Kamal of SK Kg Tunku was in total command in the Under-12 Grade One contest at the inaugural Petaling Utama district meet at the SJK (C) Puay Chai in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday.

The 11-year-old training at the Sarina’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Club (SRGC) dominated both the individual disciplines to emerge as the top overall finisher.

In the individual events, she captured the gold medals in the ribbon and clubs ahead of 13 other competitors.

SRGC coach Sarina Sundara Rajah praised her charge for showing good progress compared with her outing in the similar category last season.

“She has been going through the paces at the club for almost four years. And she has improved tremendously over the past 12 months. She is certainly a better performer now and she will be ready to take on stiffer challenges at the state meet. Although all of our gymnasts were given a month to master the increase in difficulties, they have coped well to produce encouraging results in a short period at the district competition,” the former national gymnast added.

Aniyah’s club mate Chloe Wong Xian Li from SJK (C) Puay Chai also repeated the similar feat in the Under-Eight Little Gymnast competition decided over two individual events.

En route to bagging the overall title in the category, the seven-year-old Wong executed her moves to almost perfection and secured the top spot in the freehand and rope.

Meanwhile, Petaling Utama trainee Chia Xue Wen claimed two (clubs and ribbon) of the three individual events at stake in the three-way fight in the open Grade Three competition.

In the ball competition, Chia settled for the second spot behind Lim Ze Xing of SJK (C) Yuk Chai.

The recent one-day meet also served as the selection for the upcoming Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) championships scheduled at the SMJK Yu Hua in Kajang from Feb 21 to 25.

A total of 36 competitors were on the starting list to vie for the top three positions to represent the district in four categories including the Under-12 Grade Two.

Petaling Utama technical chairman Monaliza Ariff said they hosted the trials because there was a bigger pool of hopefuls fighting to earn their slots in the district team.

“Previously, it was a direct qualification for the state meet. But, we were forced to limit the total entries to six gymnasts for each district to ensure that the state meet runs according to schedule. For our district competition, we were satisfied with the gymnasts’ performances. Their respective coaches have done a very good job in preparing the gymnasts in making a strong impression,” she added.
